BPUK Newsletter October 2023
BPUK aims to bring together the community, policymakers, environmentalists, businesses, energy producers, and Bitcoiners to explore how we might utilise this groundbreaking technology to support UK households, businesses, and our communities in a sustainable and innovative way.
We’re doing this by breaking our work into three initiatives:
Policy
Mining and Sustainability
Next Gen
These groups focus on positioning Bitcoin at the forefront, providing information where needed, and being a representative for Bitcoin in the UK.
The leaders of the initiatives are Freddie New as the head of Policy, Susie Violet Ward as the head of Mining and Sustainability as well as Matt Hall as the newly appointed head of Next Gen. Bill Aronson, our esteemed CEO, continues to guide us with his visionary leadership.
What BPUK has been up to:
Celebrating Six Months of Bitcoin Policy UK
In just six months, Bitcoin Policy UK has carved out a remarkable journey of growth and achievement. We've not only established ourselves as a key player in the Bitcoin arena in the UK but also continued to build momentum, showcasing our commitment to innovation and leadership in the sector. Thanks to our dedicated team and supportive members, Bitcoin Policy UK is truly going from strength to strength, shaping the future of Bitcoin policy and usage with every step forward.
October was a big month for the team, with two of the group heads attending Bitcoin Amsterdam as speakers - our participation at Bitcoin Amsterdam was not just a highlight, but a defining moment for Bitcoin Policy UK. This event has ushered us onto the global stage, underscoring our role in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Our presence and contributions at Bitcoin Amsterdam have set a new standard for our endeavours, showcasing our commitment to shaping the future of Bitcoin.

Our team's insights and expertise were not only well-received but also highly influential, marking a pivotal step in our mission to drive meaningful dialogue and policy in the Bitcoin space. Bitcoin Amsterdam was more than just a conference for us; it was a vivid demonstration of how far BPUK has come in a remarkably short time and a testament to our growing impact and prominence in the global Bitcoin community.

Additionally, our CEO Bill Aronson was invited to attend a DLT lunch event, hosted by the Gibraltar Minister for Digital and Financial Services, accompanied by industry, governmental and regulatory figures. He was able to discuss the only distributed ledger technology that matters - Bitcoin - with attendees and guests.
Policy
Key policy work this month focused on the preparation and delivery of Freddie’s panel session at Bitcoin Amsterdam. Freddie took centre stage addressing the critical and timely topic of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). His discussion was a powerful message that resonated with the global Bitcoin community, highlighting the potential risks and implications of CBDCs.

Susie's participation at Bitcoin Amsterdam in the "We Are the Media Now" panel and her commentary on Snowden's insights were particularly impactful.
Susie, showcased the pinnacle of her work with Forbes and CityAM. In a world where mainstream media often perpetuates misconceptions and FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) about Bitcoin, Susie's mission was to cut through the noise and bring the undeniable benefits of Bitcoin to light. Her address centred on the crucial role of responsible journalism in educating the public, dispelling myths, and highlighting the transformative potential of Bitcoin.

In a significant leap forward for our advocacy efforts, Russell Rukin, our Mining and Sustainability Advisor, attended the Labour Party Conference. This was not just an attendance; it was a strategic move, placing BPUK at the heart of political discourse in the UK. Russell's participation in this prominent political event underscores our commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue between the Bitcoin community and key political figures.
At the conference, Russell brought to the forefront the vital discussions surrounding Bitcoin's role in sustainable development and its potential to revolutionise the energy sector. His engagement with political leaders and policy makers was pivotal, highlighting the importance of integrating Bitcoin into sustainable practices and shaping a future where technology and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
Russell's involvement in the Labour Party Conference marks a crucial step in our journey to influence policy and advocate for a sustainable approach to Bitcoin mining. It signifies BPUK's growing influence in political circles and our dedication to ensuring that the voices and perspectives of the Bitcoin community are heard at the highest levels of government. In particular, BPUK is not affiliated with any one political party, and our message is equally relevant for Labour, the Conservatives, or any of the UK’s other parties too.
